'Frantic' Search For Survivors After Earthquake In Indonesia Kills Nearly 100

Dozens of buildings collapsed on Wednesday in Indonesia's northern province of Aceh, when a 6.4 magnitude quake struck in the early hours.

Earlier, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said 270 others have been injured in the quake. Gen. Tatang Sulaiman said four people were also pulled from the rubble alive, according to The Telegraph.

Indonesia sits on the "Ring of Fire", hence earthquakes and volcanic eruptions frequently transpire in the country. The organization has not yet said if blood transfusions are needed for natural disaster survivors but blood donations to the Red Cross are always accepted. "Some places have generators, but there are not many", local disaster agency head Puteh Manaf told AFP.

Rescue workers and medical personnel rushed to the epicenter of the quake in Aceh province, where the government reported that 93 people were confirmed dead and more than 500 others had sustained injuries, many serious. Indonesia's Climate, Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said the quake did not generate a tsunami. Arifin Hadi, head of disaster management for the Red Cross, said water trucks have been sent into the area, as well as hygiene kits, tarps, jerry cans and body bags.

He tells a news conference there is extensive damage to buildings with more than 200 shop houses and dwellings either severely damaged or flattened.

According to the local media, Jakarta Post, the dome of the Dayah Mudi Mesra Samalanga Mosque, a coffee shop in a gasoline station and a building of STAI Al-Aziziah Islamic University, collapsed during the quake, which had its center at a depth of 10 kilometers. He said five of the quake victims died at the hospital. "We were afraid a tsunami can come at any time".

National Football League round-up: Brady seizes all-time win mark, Cowboys clinch playoffs berth
That dream, improbable at best, officially ended with Sunday's 26-10 loss to the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium. Brady, who was playing on a sore knee, threw one touchdown pass for the Patriots who improved to 10-2 on the season.

Muhammad Reza Faisal says many people are being treated in tents pitched on the grounds of the hospital, which was damaged in Wednesday's shallow magnitude 6.5 quake.

Abbas says there is an urgent need for excavation equipment to move heavy debris and emergency supplies.

The local news also said that the quake was also felt in Takengon in Central Aceh regency, Banda Aceh and Bener Meriah regency.

Sutopo Nugroho said, "We estimate the number of casualties will continue to rise as some of the residents are still likely [to be] under the rubble of the buildings".

In a statement, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said it had deployed two staff to help coordinate any assistance.

Villager Ahmad Salam said he and his family couldn't sleep in their house because its roof was damaged and rain was pouring in.
