Populist lawmaker Wilders convicted of anti-Moroccan chants

Prosecutors had been seeking a fine of €5,000. "Consequently, no punishment is imposed".

Judges are set to deliver their verdicts in the politically charged hate speech trial of Dutch anti-Islam lawmaker Geert Wilders.

"People are sick and exhausted of politicians who refused to listen to their worries about rising immigration, the loss of law and order, taxes being spent overseas while domestic needs are rising, trade agreements that harm employment at home", Wilders told USA TODAY in the wake of Trump's victory. "There is no doubt this will encourage the Dutch people to vote for change as well".

Observers say rather than hurting the controversial lawmaker, his trial has boosted his popularity among Dutch voters, anxious about the influx of immigrants and driven by eurosceptic sentiments.

"We are witnessing a Patriotic Spring, in America as well as in Europe", he said.

At one meeting in a Hague cafe, he asked supporters whether they wanted more or fewer Moroccans in the Netherlands.

When the crowd shouted back "Fewer!"

In the video, Gronk uses a walker to slowly make his way down a hallway. "It's about overcoming challenges, adversities". Gronkowksi has had a rough season injury-wise, playing in only eight games due to hamstring and lung injuries.

Wilders' Freedom Party leads Prime Minister Mark Rutte's conservative VVD party in some polls ahead of a national parliamentary election scheduled for March 15. 'We'll arrange that, ' Wilders said, smiling, when the chanting died down.

'This statement can be regarded as affecting the dignity of this group as a whole. It convicted him of insulting a group and incitement to discrimination.

Wilders boycotted most of the high-profile trial, and refused to appear in court for the verdict.

Wilders said his conviction was "insanity" and said the three judges who handed down the ruling were "haters" of his far-right Freedom Party (PVV).

His views have seen him receive death threats including from terror groups such as the Islamic State group and Al-Qaeda.

Political observers say Wilders will benefit either way from the verdict due to the publicity the trial has generated. He later said he plans an appeal.
