Magnitude 6.8 earthquake off Northern California

A 6.5 magnitude quake was recorded off the coast of northern California this morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The epicenter of the quake, which hit at 6:49 am (1449 GMT), was located 97 miles (157 kilometers) west of Ferndale, California at a depth of 6.2 miles (10 kilometers), USGS said.

The quake was first reported with a 6.9 magnitude but downgraded to 6.5.

The quake rumbled 157 km (97 mi) W of Ferndale, California, 166 km (102 mi) W of Fortuna, California, 168 km (104 mi) W of Eureka, California, 176 km (109 mi) WSW of Arcata, California, and 451 km (279 mi) WNW of Sacramento, California. No damages or injuries have been reported from the natural disaster aside from light shaking felt by communities along the coast.

According to USGS mapping, the temblor, while strong, did not produce violent shaking on land.

Eberhart said he felt the quake while he was getting ready for his shift Thursday morning.
