Video Of Elizabeth Warren Being Silenced In The Senate Is Powerful & Shocking

Senate Republicans voted to formally silence Elizabeth Warren for impugning her peer, Jeff Sessions, by reading a 1986 letter by late civil rights icon Coretta Scott King condemning the Alabama senator's record on civil rights.

The incident occurred after Warren quoted King, who had written a letter to the Senate in 1986 to oppose Sessions' appointment as a U.S. District Judge. That prompted Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to come to the Senate floor and call for a vote on whether Warren had violated Senate rules by imputing a colleague's conduct or motive.

In the letter, King explained her opposition of Sessions, writing: "Anyone who has used the power of his office as United States Attorney to intimidate and chill the free exercise of the ballot by citizens should not be elevated to our courts". Despite her plea to continue reading the letter, senators voted along party lines (49 to 43) to force Warren to take her seat.

Warren was silenced under Rule 19, which prevents legislators from impugning one another on the Senate floor. Speaking about Warren, McConnell said: "She was warned. Nevertheless, she persisted", McConnell said after the vote. Jeff Sessions as USA attorney general, social media began rallying around two hashtags: #LetLizSpeak and #ShePersisted.

Warren ultimately read the rest of the letter from outside the Senate on Facebook Live.

During confirmation hearing testimony before the committee, former colleagues said Sessions referred to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and other organizations as "communist inspired" and "un-American organizations with anti-traditional American values". "Sen. Warren, quote, said 'Sen".

Manchin to vote against DeVos' confirmation
If there is a tie, Vice President Mike Pence casts the deciding vote, which will give DeVos the job. "I will not, I can not vote to confirm her as our nation's next secretary of education", Ms.

The liberal Massachusetts Democrat was attempting to recite the words of Martin Luther King's widow, which criticized Sen.

Mr Sessions is expected to be confirmed as attorney general after an unusually acrimonious debate over his record on civil rights.

A pair of party-line votes supported this freakish interpretation of the rules, which if taken to its logical conclusion, could effectively silence meaningful debate on any presidential nominee who is a sitting senator.

She was warned by Sen.

"I can tell you, since this administration has come in, people are very anxious about their voting rights. their democracy. the issue that goes to the heart of this nomination, which is how Sen".
