PM inaugurates India's longest road tunnel

PM inaugurates India's longest road tunnel

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will today inaugurate the Chenani Nashri Tunnel-the 10.9-km-long tunnel that connects Chenani and Nashri town at the two ends of the tunnel.

"Rs 27 lakh worth of fuel is likely to be saved per day", Mr Singh said. The road tunnel is India's longest and will reduce driving time between Jammu and Srinagar by two hours.

Sharma said that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have enough craze to see even a single big project initiated and sanctioned by the Modi Government for the welfare of the State.

"I feel happy to announce that the ring road of Jammu costing around Rs 2,100 crore and Rs 2,200 crore for Srinagar road are going to be constructed".

Stating that the Chenani-Nashri tunnel can be called the "safest highway tunnel in the country", Chandwar said that the tunnel also has specialized cameras which would count the number of vehicles in the tunnel and accordingly set the speed limit.

It has traffic and fire control systems, video surveillance, FM connectivity and transverse ventilation systems.

The tunnel, that connects Udhampur and Ramban districts of Jammu and Kashmir, bypasses a unsafe hilly terrain of over 30 km of the strategic Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. It is part of the National Highway Authority of India's project between Jammu and Srinagar, along National Highway 44. Criticising Pakistan, Modi said "those across the border are not able to handle themselves". The Prime Minister thanked the Minister of Road Transport & Highways and Shipping Shri Nitin Gadkari and his team for the tunnel and appreciated the youth for contributing their labour for the development of the state. "Tourism will also bring economic growth".

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi on Sunday opened an 11 kilometre tunnel through Himalayan terrain to help ease travel on a motorway linking the troubled Kashmir Valley with the rest of India.

He also praised those involved in the tunnel's construction, particularly the Kashmiri youths who toiled in realising the multi-crore project.

There is also a parallel escape tunnel, with "Cross Passages" connecting to the main tunnel at intervals of 300 metres. "On one side, some misguided youth in Kashmir are throwing stones".

"Very few tunnels in the world are having fully integrated tunnel control system".

Gadkari further said that it is for the first time that a Prime Minister was devoting India's longest 9-km tunnel to Jammu and Kashmir and the people of India.

The VSDs and motors are installed at the North (Nashri) and South (Chenani) portals for air supply and exhaust.

On the features of the tunnel, Jain said the tunnel has a three-tier power system to keep the tunnel illuminated.
