Canadian PM responds to Trump's criticism of dairy industry

In a statement issued Friday, Alberta Milk - the organization representing the province's 521 dairy farmers - said its members will not "shy away or be bullied" from promoting Canadian milk, cheese, butter, yogurt, and the agricultural marketing system used to produce those products. He also suggested bringing House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) and other lawmakers into the discussion.

Walker said he would like to see Canada at least delay its policy until a solution can be found. "People can't just stop milking, you can't just dump the milk...there's a real danger that if we get to the drop dead point and don't have a resolution, they're going to have to get out of farming...and that's just unacceptable", the governor said.

Canada brought in almost one billion dollars in American dairy products a year ago, while the US imported just a hair above $112 million of Canadian products.

According to President Trump, Canada's dairy industry is "disgraceful" and has forced dairy farmers in NY and Wisconsin to go out of business.

The U.S. president criticized Canadian policies related to a few industries including lumber, timber and energy, adding that officials will have to get to the negotiating table with Canada very quickly. "It's a disgrace", Trump said.

"The way to do that is to make arguments in a respectful fashion, based on facts, and work constructively and collaboratively with our neighbors", said the Liberal leader. But local farmers and economists say America has only itself to blame and are wondering if the President has even looked at the numbers.

Trudeau is anxious about Trump's protectionist talk and has repeatedly sent his ministers to the U.S.to talk about the importance of the trade relationship. Senator Chuck Schumer said today that he agrees with his sworn enemy for once, noting it's time for Congress to make Canada "rescind their unfair policy and again play by the rules".

Relations with the U.S. are crucial for Canada, since more than 75 percent of its exports go to the U.S. Eighteen percent of U.S. exports go to Canada. The file has always been a contentious one, with Canada largely fending off NAFTA challenges launched by the United States alleging Parliament Hill's policies essentially act as a subsidy for domestic producers.
