Pakistan presses ICJ for early hearing of Kulbhushan Jadhav case

It bears mentioning that the UN's judicial arm stayed the execution of RAW agent Kalbhushan Jadhav on May 18 and requested consular access to him.

A day after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) stayed the death sentence awarded to former Indian Naval officer and alleged Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav by the Pakistan military court, Islamabad on Friday filed a plea in the Hague to rehear the case within six weeks.

The ICJ has asked Pakistan not execute Jadhav pending final proceedings after India approached it demanding immediate suspension of the death sentence given to Jadhav.

The request was made in view of the upcoming elections for ICJ judges, scheduled to be held in November.

A senior official, however, was quoted as saying that the ICJ might resume the hearing in the case in October.

Pakistan cannot execute Indian national Jadhav until it makes a final decision in the proceedings of the case, the ICJ said.

England beat Argentina 3-0 in Federation Internationale de Football Association U20 World Cup opener
With the victory, South Korea are now the co-leaders in Group A with England, who earlier beat Argentina 3-0 at the same venue. However, a quality performance saw the Young Lions take Argentina apart, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin giving England the lead.

Senator Malik said it was matter of concern that why the government failed to stop ICJ to exceed its parameters in Khulbhushan's issue. However, the federal government has not taken any decision about replacing Khawar Quraishi.

Reportedly, Pakistan is to dispatch an ad-hoc judge to the worldwide court while a legal team would also be formed to assist counsel in the ICJ for Pakistan, Khawar Qureshi.

Responding to reports of Pakistan's alleged move to seek redressal on the Kashmir issue from the International Court of Justice, the Congress on Monday, while dismissing the plausibility of the same, said the ICJ's interference in the matter is not a practical move, adding that Islamabad is gravely "mistaken in the matter". "Our lawyer finished the arguments in 50 minutes, though he had 90 minutes to present the case", Rehman said, insisting that Pakistan could have done better had the legal team been well prepared.

Earlier in 1999, Pakistan claimed $60 million in compensation after a Pakistan Navy aircraft, flying well inside Pakistani territory, was downed by India.

Jadhav's case is the latest flash-point in the tensions between Pakistan and India.
