Mortuary chief: John Glenn's remains weren't disrespected

On both occasions, inspectors declined and were reportedly "horrified" by the offer to peek at Glenn's remains.

Mr Glenn died last December, but his wife wanted him buried in April on their wedding anniversary.

Glenn, who served as a Marine pilot in World War II and the Korean War before becoming the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth, died December 8, 2016, at the age of 95.

8 death and his April 6 burial at Arlington National Cemetery, his body was housed at Dover Air Force Base in DE to "ensure an increased level of privacy and security for a renowned public servant", says a Pentagon rep.

Officials say the Glenn family has been notified of the allegations, but they have not yet commented.

The leader of the inspection team reportedly told Zwicharowski's supervisor, and the incident is now under investigation.

Astronaut Lt. Col. John H. Glenn is pictured at Cape Canaveral, Florida, on February 13, 1962.

The allegations were first reported by the Military Times, citing an internal memo dated May 11.

While inspecting the Dover Mortuary Branch on February 28 and March 2, Skillman alleges, branch chief William Zwicharowski offered her and other inspectors "to view the deceased". Between his burial and his death, Glenn's body was held by the Air Force, who ensure "an increased level of privacy and security for a renowned public servant, Marine Corps officer, and pioneer of space exploration".

Zwicharowski and other personnel at Dover questioned the legitimacy of the Pentagon inspection team.

In 2012, Zwicharowski told Martin that he was branded a troublemaker when he called for an outside investigation of the way the mortuary was run following accusations that the mortuary had mishandled the remains of fallen servicemembers.

Military Times made multiple attempts to contact Zwicharowski.

In a 2013 interview with William H. McMichael of the Delaware News Journal, Zwicharowski said: "I want to guarantee the families of our fallen, in the past and in the future, that they're treated with honor, dignity and respect here at Dover".

Zwicharowski and other mortuary workers said they were stunned when the two embalmers returned to Dover in March as part of the Pentagon inspection team. The employee has been re-assigned and is not being named by the Air Force.

"I was given no reason for the IG investigation", said Zwicharowski, who is now reassigned to a community outreach position in the base's mission support group.
