Trump hails the fallen and their families at Arlington

"Here at this hallowed shrine, we honor the noblest among us, the men and women who paid the ultimate price for victory and for freedom", said Trump.

"What an incredible ceremony ... there is an incredible crowd", said Governor Asa Hutchinson, "this is a time of remembrance for those who have served ... and it's a time for recommitment of us individually to our nation".

Trump recognized several Gold Star families who've lost loved ones during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, pausing during his remarks to thank and applaud their families.

The president participated in the somber, annual observance at Arlington National Cemetery.

Words can not measure the depth of their devotion, the purity of their love, or the totality of their courage.

Trump tweeted Monday. "I look forward to paying my respects to our courageous men and women on this Memorial Day at Arlington National Cemetery later this morning". We can not repay them.

Zimmer: 'I'll be back with one eye or two'
Zimmer said he's kept himself occupied with housework, fishing and riding a four-wheeler around his property. Zimmer also provided details on his right eye, which now contains a gas bubble.

"We do not know where they came from, who they left behind, or what they hoped to be, but we do know what they did", Mr. Trump said. He also personally thanked retired Kansas Senator Bob Dole, who was wounded in World War II. He attended the ceremony along with his wife, Elizabeth Dole, also a former United States senator. "Special, special people", he added.

Trump fired back on Twitter and later in an interview with ABC News, insinuating that Khan's wife, Ghazala, was not allowed to speak at the DNC.

Earlier in the morning, the president visited the cemetery's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where he placed a wreath and reflected silently as a bugle player performed taps.

The president was accompanied to Arlington cemetery by Vice President Mike Pence, Defence Secretary Jim Mattis and General Joseph DunfoChairmanrman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as well as a slew of advisers and Cabinet members, including veterans' secretary David Shulkin and housing secretary Ben Carson.

Among those laid to rest in Section 60 is Robert Kelly, son of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly.

President Donald Trump has visited a section of Arlington National Cemetery where US military members killed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are buried. Six-year-old Christian Jacobs' father, Marine Sgt. Christopher Jacobs, died during military training exercises in Twentynine Palms, Calif., in 2011.
