Rep. Roger Williams (R-TX) Says Staffer Shot At Congressional Baseball Practice

Rep. Roger Williams (R-TX) Says Staffer Shot At Congressional Baseball Practice

Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas, is transported away from the scene by emergency medical service personnel.

Scalise was the lone Congressman shot, along with two Capitol Police officers and a Williams' staffer named Zack Barth, who was released from the hospital later in the day.

The perpetrator, believed to be armed with a rifle, was allegedly arrested and sent to the hospital after being shot by U.S. Capitol law enforcement, reports Fox News.

Williams wasn't shot but injured his ankle diving into the dugout for cover, he said.

The Republican team was practicing on a baseball field in Virginia when a gunman identified as James T. Hodgkinson opened fire shortly after 7 a.m.

According to Williams' office, the Republican baseball team regularly practices at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park in Alexandria starting at about 6:30 a.m. Williams has served as the team's coach since he joined Congress in 2013.

A scream rang out from second base, Brooks said.

The hospital where Rep. Steve Scalise is recuperating from a gunshot wound says he "remains in critical condition, but has improved in the last 24 hours".

"Capitol Police came and they took a step forward and not a step back", Williams said.

Top 8 lines from Jeff Sessions' hearing
But many Democrats have accused Sessions of misleading the Senate Judiciary Committee during his January confirmation hearing. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., questions Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Capitol Hill in Washington , Tuesday, June 13, 2017 .

Williams and the others had been practicing for a Thursday night charity game when the chaos began.

USA representatives Ron DeSantis and Jeff Duncan had ducked out of baseball practice early on Wednesday when a middle-aged man in the parking lot asked them if the players in red shirts on the field were Republicans or Democrats.

"I just want to thank the security detail because they saved our lives", Barton said. "I was running for my life, got into the dugout".

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of Congress, their staffs, Capitol Police, first responders, and all others affected", Trump said.

Barth said the best thing he could do was get on the ground and make himself the smallest target possible as the gunman took aim at him.

On Wednesday, University of Texas at Austin President Greg Fenves wished Zack Barth a speedy recovery. "That is something that we all need to work on".

A spokesman for Brady said the congressman had left the baseball field just before the shooting and was not injured.

"If he had gotten on the field, we had nowhere to go", Williams said.
