US Open: Nervy Petra Kvitova stuns Garbine Muguruza to reach quarters

US Open: Nervy Petra Kvitova stuns Garbine Muguruza to reach quarters

After returning to competition in May, Kvitova has gone through her first four U.S. Open matches without dropping a set - and has been rewarded with a quarterfinal matchup against Venus Williams.

The traumatic incident which happened inside her own home left the 27-year-old with quite serious injuries to her left hand, which incidentally is the one she plays with. But far more remarkable is the fact that she's playing at all: In December, a man broke into her Czech Republic apartment and attacked her with a knife, badly injuring her left hand.

However, the evidence of Monday night is that Kvitova is once again capable of the irresistible attacking tennis which brought her Wimbledon titles in 2011 and 2014. "The injury is severe, and I will need to see specialists, but if you know anything about me, I am strong and will fight this".

"I don't think that I can find the right words".

The five-time major champion and former No. 1, competing at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time since her 15-month doping suspension, and 16th-seeded Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia split the first two sets of their fourth-round match. Kvitova has earned the her rivals' respect, none more so than Venus, who is only 1-4 lifetime against the Czech.

"I came here without any expectations", Kvitova said. "Venus has something special which the other players doesn't have", she said. Sunday night, she upset Garbine Muguruza, widely considered the favorite to win the women's draw, in straight sets.

Czech Karolina Pliskova must reach the final to hang on to the number one spot, and Ukraine's fourth seed Elina Svitolina needs to reach the semi-finals to stay in contention. So although both players come into Tuesday's match with momentum, it is Williams who arrives with urgency. She made 42 unforced errors to Muguruza's 25 yet hit 24 winners to her seven. Considering that the 23 year-old Spanish player is the only one of the three to win a grand slam, and she's played sensationally all summer, the promotion would be a nice consolation prize to losing to an inspiring Kvitova.

Kvitova would get the chance to serve for the set six games later but played a poor game, and fell 2-0 behind in the tie-break. Playing with well-controlled aggression, Muguruza placed her serves well and forced Kvitova to be on the defense for a 2-1 lead. "I was probably rushing a little bit, so I just needed to really try to be a bit more calm and play some rallies". "I'm not sure where (Wozniacki) is", said the wildcard. You know, great for her. She smiled, twirled and exited the arena looking like a player ready to make good on that promise, like a woman exhausted of coming thisclose.
