Bryant's resilience, D-line's dominance lead Clemson past Auburn

Bryant's resilience, D-line's dominance lead Clemson past Auburn

Clemson's defense racked up a staggering 11 sacks, harassing Auburn quarterback Jarrett Stidham all game and holding him to just 79 yards passing. "What a tough, gritty game. Two good teams battling it out", Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said. "We got a lot of football left to play and we're going to get ready for next week". Despite allowing 284 yards, Auburn kept Clemson scoreless until the very last minute of the first half and notched a few sacks themselves.

A national television audience, a raucous crowd in Memorial Stadium and many promising recruits are slated to be on hand for tonight's prime-time showdown of ACC and SEC Tigers, including Clemson commitment Trevor Lawrence, who's seemed to add to his status as the nation's top quarterback prospect in the early going at Cartersville High School in Georgia.

Clemson had a 12-play, 88-yard drive that was capped by a 3-yard touchdown run by Bryant to take a 7-6 lead at intermission. "The last drive before the half was a thing of beauty". His second completion of the game went for 23 yards.

Aside from Kam Pettway's 79 yards rushing, Auburn's running game was virtually nonexistent as he was the only Auburn player in double-digits rushing.

According to the ESPN broadcast Saturday night, it only took two weeks of action for Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn to assume play-calling duties again.

Auburn jumped out to a six-point lead, thanks to some Clemson penalties, a timid Tiger offense, and a turnover, but then was shut down the rest of the night.

Southgate praises England for not panicking
In the other match in the group, Scotland won 3-0 at Lithuania to move level on points with Slovenia and four behind Slovakia . Of course, it must be said that defensive football is Malta's stock in trade, it's simply how they play the game .

The Tigers had 11 sacks with Austin Bryant leading the way with four. By the end of the first half, Pettway had 16 carries already for 59 yards, good for almost 60 percent of Auburn's total offense.

That Clemson defense has a big challenge Saturday, facing Lamar Jackson, Louisville's Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback. It saved the day on Saturday.

Bryant did what he needed to: Kelly Bryant was far from spectacular, but he didn't need to be.

Clemson scored a playoff-case-boosting nonconference win over an SEC team in which it allowed just six points, and it will continue its pursuit of a third straight playoff bid with a road trip to Louisville next week, where its defensive line will be faced with Heisman victor Lamar Jackson ... but also a vulnerable Cardinals offensive line.

There is unprecedented territory surrounding the #3 Clemson Tigers. Clemson, K.Bryant 19-59, Choice 7-17, Feaster 3-15, Fuller 4-9, Cooper 1-0, (Team) 2-(minus 2).
