Catalonia refuses to give police over to Spain

Spain's Interior Ministry began coordinating all police efforts Saturday in Catalonia, a tactic created to halt the region's referendum on secession following tensions with the regional police force controlled by the pro-independence Catalan government.

Forn said the chief of the Mossos d'Esquadra had expressed his opposition to the measure during a meeting Saturday with the top state prosecutor in Catalonia and chiefs of two other national police forces, the National Police and the Civil Guard.

Spain has announced all local police across Catalonia are to be placed under the control of the Spanish Interior Ministry.

They would join the roughly 5,000 state police normally stationed in Catalonia and around 17,000 Mossos officers.

"Disobedience of the law by a part of the political power is the opposite of democracy, it means an imposition, an injustice, the violation of people's rights and an attack to democracy", Rajoy said in a televised appearance on Wednesday night.

Spain's post-dictatorship Constitution only allows the central government to call a referendum on secession and establishes that all Spaniards must have a say in a vote on the country's sovereignty.

How to Watch Leicester City vs. Liverpool
Two home draws against Sevilla and Burnley were great opportunities to turn things round but Liverpool failed to win either match. In the 17th minute Hamer again denied Coutinho and the Ox also wasted a decent opportunity with a wild shot.

Spain's Interior Ministry canceled time off and scheduled leave for Civil Guard and National Police officers who are being deployed to ensure the vote doesn't happen.

On the same day that the mass protest took place, the CNP raided several Catalan government offices using a court mandate, confiscating between nine and 10 million blank ballots to be used in the upcoming referendum.

"The leader of the Catalan police will not hand over his functions", he said. He said the measure "does not mean taking command" of the Catalan police, but it is "simply to agree on a means of coordination".

Twelve Catalan government officials arrested last week have been released, but six remain under investigation.

Jordi Vives, a spokesman for the students, told Catalan public television: "We are showing that as students we have a part to play and that for now we are staying put". The arrests were the first involving Catalan officials since the campaign to hold an independence vote began in earnest in 2011.

Bigio warned that the incarceration by the central government of regional officials and protesters in Catalonia will inflame the tensions and make the independence seekers sure to go ahead with the secession plan.
