Disgraced ex-congressman Anthony Weiner jailed over sexting case

A grim Anthony Weiner shuffled silently into court Monday morning to learn his fate for sexting with an underage girl.

The former Democratic congressman from NY had faced up to 27 months in prison on Monday after his guilty plea to one charge of transferring obscene material to a minor.

"Anthony Weiner, a former congressman and candidate for mayor, asked a girl who he knew to be 15 years old to display her naked body and engage in sexually explicit behavior for him online", Kim said in a statement. He pleaded guilty in May to transferring obscene messages to a minor, and agreed he would not appeal any sentence of 27 months or less.

In addition to the prison term, Weiner also was sentenced to three years of supervised release.

Weiner's probation terms require him to register as a sex offender. Weiner's habit led him to resign his House seat in 2011, doomed his 2013 run for mayor, and rocked Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign during the closing days of the race, when FBI agents investigating his contact with the teen came across emails on his laptop between Abedin and Clinton.

The charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

Ryan Zinke: National Monuments Should Shrink
The memo suggests locals worry that the national parks distinction, made in August 2016, will bar those activities on those lands. Earlier this year, President Donald Trump tasked the Department of the Interior with reviewing dozens of national monuments.

Ultimately, Judge Cote had been moved less by reforming Weiner than sending a message about his crime.

His first texting scandal prompted Weiner, who was married, to admit to several inappropriate relationships.

The 15-year-old girl initially contacted Weiner through a direct message on Twitter in January 2016.

"Something more and different is required, beyond personal and professional consequences, beyond the collateral consequences that he has faced before, beyond the scrutiny of the public, all of which have failed to sufficiently deter him in the past", she said.

The probe became a factor in the presidential election when then-FBI Director James Comey announced an investigation into Clinton's private server needed to be reopened because of emails found on a laptop used by Weiner and Abedin. Abedin filed for divorce in May 2017. "It will remain a challenge for years to come", Cote said in court.

Abedin announces the next day that she and Weiner are separating.
