Target to raise minimum wage to $15 by 2020

TGT announced that it will be upping its minimum hourly wage over the next few years, increasing it to $11 starting next month and committing to $15 by the end of 2020. The company raised its minimum hourly wage a year ago to $10 an hour, but without making a formal announcement.

"It's part of our overall commitment to investing in our team and making sure we're attracting and retaining great talent", Target chief executive CEO Brian Cornell told reporters. Target has 16 stores in the Charlotte metro area, and the company says it employs roughly 160 people per store.

The new Target minimum wage is about 50% greater than the federal minimum hourly wage of $7.25 and matches the minimum wages in MA and Washington, the highest in the country.

As part of their "Fight for Fifteen" movement, unions are now pushing for raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour across industries, as it is considered to be a "living wage" by labor advocates.

The size of that investment is known only to Target for the moment, but it comes on top of the $7 billion that the company is already spending to refurbish stores and open new locations in cities and on college campuses.

How to Watch Leicester City vs. Liverpool
Two home draws against Sevilla and Burnley were great opportunities to turn things round but Liverpool failed to win either match. In the 17th minute Hamer again denied Coutinho and the Ox also wasted a decent opportunity with a wild shot.

It's also much higher than the current federal minimum wage of $7.25.

The increased minimum wage ordinances will likely have a muted effect as market forces have naturally driven wages up in recent years.

"We thought the timing was right as we move into the holiday season", Cornell said. The Wall Street Journal reported in January that Walmart's average salary is $13.69 an hour.

The $11 wage is higher than the minimum wage in 48 states, and it matches amounts in MA and Washington, Target says.

The controversial House Bill 2, repealed last spring, explicitly forbade local governments from setting their own minimum wages.
