Defence Minister Sitharaman visits border areas to boost soldiers' moral

According to media reports, "The Defence Minister will visit Srinagar on September 29 and Siachen on September 30".

The defence minister, who was accompanied by the army chief, General Bipin Rawat, was briefed by the army commander at Srinagar's 15 Corps headquarters about the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

Sitharaman is slated to visit J&K on Friday to review the situation along the 778-km LoC. Nirmala Sitharaman, who chaired her first DAC meeting after taking over the reins of the Defence Ministry, reviewed the status of the capital acquisition schemes and directed that they be meticulously monitored and brought to maturity within stipulated timelines.

The Defence minister interacted with the troops and commended their dedication and commitment towards their duties in the challenging circumstances. Sitharaman was given an overview of the Counter Infiltration and Counter Militancy Operations undertaken in the recent past.

Sitharaman complimented the commanders for the "high level of synergy achieved with the the state police and the central armed paramilitary forces". The governor also sought Sitharaman's intervention for the return of certain pockets of land to the state government which was no longer required for military purposes.
