Henry Bolton elected the new leader of UKIP in shock result

Henry Bolton elected the new leader of UKIP in shock result

A relative outsider, the former Army officer picked up endorsements from other senior figures as they dropped out of the leadership race - crucially gaining Nigel Farage's backing as a "political referee".

"She's a former Labour candidate but her extreme views on Islam and the campaign against Sharia law would have taken Ukip in the wrong direction".

UKIP had a disastrous General Election - and their membership fell dramatically.

Phil Hornby spent the day on the English Riviera, and watched the build-up to an unexpected result.

That comment was likely aimed at anti-Muslim candidate Anne Marie Waters, who came in second with 21 percent of the vote.

In his victory speech at Ukip conference in Torquay, he called on members to rally around the party.

Tatiana Smurova-Bolton gave birth on platform 13 of the St Pancras, a UKIP spokesperson confirmed, and the couple subsequently named their daughter Victoria.

Former army officer elected Ukip leader
Henry Bolton , a former soldier and police officer, won UKIP's seven-person leadership election with 30 percent of the vote. UKIP's finances are shaky, with some party staff working on reduced salaries in order to keep the organisation functioning.

Farage tweeted that Bolton was "a man of real substance" while Arron Banks, the insurance millionaire who was Ukip's biggest donor, said he was ready to engage with the party again.

He promised to pressure the government into a hard Brexit.

There were a total of 12,915 votes cast in the leadership election, compared with the more than 300,000 secured by Jeremy Corbyn when he was re-elected as Labour leader previous year.

A banner was superimposed with an image of Mr Farage posing as Adolf Hitler with the European Union logo in the background.

He said he was "absolutely delighted" that Mr Bolton had been elected, and added that it was "time to roll up our sleeves and get on with the task ahead".

Asked at a press conference after the result was announced whether this made him an "establishment mole", Bolton said his background made him ready for the job. But, amid the guff, Roger Helmer, the party's energy spokesman, warned against the "undue and excessive" concern with Islamism during the leadership campaign.

Ten days later, Mr Farage quit, saying: "I said I wanted my country back, now I want my life back", insisting that - unlike his reversed resignation a year earlier - he was going for good.
