Moon touts stronger military for South

"The goal of this administration is to accelerate the transfer of wartime operational control", South Korean President Moon Jae-in said during a speech at an event commemorating Armed Forces Day on September 28.

The report cited an unnamed intelligence source saying South Korean and USA intelligence officials detected missiles being transported away from North Korea's Missile Research and Development Facility at Sanum-dong in the northern part of Pyongyang.

Anchor: Seoul and Washington have agreed to hurry up the transfer of wartime operational control (OPCON) from the USA back to South Korea.

During a summit in June, Moon and U.S. President Donald Trump agreed to "continue the alliance's work to expeditiously enable the conditions-based transfer of wartime operational control".

"Our government's determination to protect peace requires strong defense capabilities".

The reasons given by the conservative establishment for opposing the accelerated transfer of OPCON are North Korea's development of nuclear weapons and missiles and the South Korean military's inadequate preparedness, but these reasons don't make sense.

Russia's Putin says discussed Iraqi Kurds' vote with Erdogan
They both stressed the importance of preserving the territorial integrity of both Iraq and Syria , the sources said. The two leaders are expected to discuss the timing of troop deployment in the Syrian province.

Amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula, South Korea and US forces recently held their first joint short range air defense training exercise in South Korea, according to a statement released by the US Pacific Command on Friday.

Moon urged stepped up efforts to enhance the country's own defense capabilities that include the preemptive strike platform Kill-Chain and a Korean air and missile defense system, as well as a massive punishment and retaliation platform.

Also displayed at the event were the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS), the Hyungung anti-tank guided weapon, SLAM-ER long-range air-to-ground missile, the Taurus long-range air-to-ground guided missile, the Patriot PAC-II air defense missiles, and the M-SAM surface-to-air missile.

Moreover, Reuters also cited a source from the South Korean Defense Ministry as saying that he could not confirm the details of the report, and whether there have even been any unusual activities in the specified area. "And they will be getting what they want, if this goes through", Kelly said.

They said Chung Eui-yong, head of the National Security Office, briefed them about the plan when party leaders had a meeting with Moon at the Blue House on Wednesday. According to spokesmen of the ruling Democratic Party and opposition People's Party, Chung told them that the United States has promised to expand rotational deployments of strategic assets near the peninsula.

""(The deployment) will begin as early as late this year, and this will help us expand our defense capabilities", he added. It can be earlier or later than the year's end. October 10 is one of the most important political anniversaries of the North - the anniversary of the Workers' Party foundation.
