Over half million Rohingya fled Myanmar, 2000 per day, says UN

Over half million Rohingya fled Myanmar, 2000 per day, says UN

"More than half a million Rohingyas have fled across the border to Bangladesh since a counter-insurgency offensive by Myanmar's army in the wake of militant attacks on security forces in late August".

The Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) did not say what action it would take after the ceasefire ends at midnight on Monday, but it was "determined to stop the tyranny and oppression" waged against the Rohingya people.

"The human tragedy unfolding in southern Bangladesh is staggering in its scale, complexity and rapidity", they said in a statement calling the Rohingya crisis "the world's fastest developing refugee emergency".

"If, at any stage, the burmese government is open to peace, then the ARSA will be welcome and will act in reciprocity ".

Myanmar's government spokesman did not respond to requests for comment yesterday but has previously said the country does not "negotiate with terrorists".

On Friday, the United Nations said that is bracing for a possible "further exodus".

Mark Lowcock, UN under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs, reiterated an appeal for access to the population in northern Rakhine, saying the situation was "unacceptable".

The Bangladesh government revealed earlier this week about 5,000 Rohingay Muslims are crossing the border daily.

Bloody riots in 2012 forced over 100,000 Rohingya to flee to refugee camps in southeast Bangladesh, where many still live. Rights groups say the real death toll is likely to be much higher, especially among the Rohingya, while the United Nations has labelled army operations as "ethnic cleansing" against the Muslim group.

Rohingya refugees and rights groups have accused the army of setting the fires with the help of Buddhist vigilante mobs.

As many as 91,423 Rohingya have already been registered, and some 9,000 more join that list every day, he said. Around 515,000 Rohingya Muslims have arrived in Bangladesh over the last five weeks after militant attacks on police check-posts in the Buddhist majority country sparked violent reprisals.

Hasina said Myanmar wanted to create a situation to divert global attention.

The UN resident coordinator in capital Dhaka, Robert Watkins, said Bangladesh should look for new sites for the upcoming refugee camps instead of expanding the existing one.

"When you concentrate too many people into a very small area, particularly the people who are..."
