Catalan government to blame for companies' exodus from region - Spanish finance minister

Catalan government to blame for companies' exodus from region - Spanish finance minister

Spanish Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría said in an interview on Spanish radio that the government would invoke powers to take control of the regional government if Catalonia went ahead and declared independence.

Regional president Carles Puigdemont said the vote justified secession and separatists urged him to declare independence in defiance of the central government and national courts.

Spain Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has not ruled out removing the Catalan government and calling fresh regional elections.

He told German newspaper Die Welt: 'We will do everything that legislation allows us to ensure this'.

Benet Salellas of the separatist Catalan CUP party said: 'It's very clear to me that those who I represent won't accept any other scenario'. "This crisis needs to be resolved through dialogue at all levels of Spanish politics", France's European affairs minister Nathalie Loiseau said.

"We have said yes to so many mediation options that have been proposed", he said.

About 10 companies have made a decision to relocate their legal headquarters from Catalonia to other places in Spain over fears of an unilateral declaration of independence, local media reported on Saturday.

Spain also sought to reassure global investors concerned about the political situation in the country.

Counter-terrorism expert from NH talks about Las Vegas mass shooting
Authorities are still investigating the possible motivation behind what is now the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. Paddock, who worked as an apartment manager and aerospace industry worker over the years, was known as an avid gambler.

"This situation can not be solved by violence, we have to find a solution through dialogue, this is also true when you consider the economic oint of view", he said.

"They say the point is to have an independent country because it will be better", Gonzalez told NPR.

Between 250,000 and 400,000 anti-independence Catalans, and supporters from the rest of Spain, marched through the streets of Barcelona on Sunday to protest any moves for a breakaway state, following a divisive and controversial referendum on October 1 that found a majority of Catalan voters in favor of independence.

According to the Catalan government, 90 percent of participants voted for independence in the referendum on 1 October, with 2.3 million of Catalonia's 5.3 million registered voters casting a ballot.

Hundreds of thousands of Spaniards rallied Sunday in a tide of red and yellow national flags in what is the worst upheaval since the country returned to democracy in the 1970s.

Thomas says that the "powerful" show of support for unity means that a declaration of independence may not be well received. "The ideal would be not to have to take drastic measures", he said.

But Rajoy assured Catalan leaders that there "is still time" to backtrack and avoid the imposition of direct rule from Madrid.

Around 900 people were injured when officers used rubber bullets and batons against voters at polling stations.
