British secretary of state for worldwide development Priti Patel has apologised for holding several secret meetings with Israeli officials during a family holiday in August, in which she discussed a number of issues, including India.
She was ordered back from an official trip in Africa by the PM and summoned to Downing Street over the row.
Priti Patel said in a letter to Prime Minister Theresa May that her actions "fell below the high standards that are expected of a secretary of state".
May responded in a letter, saying: "Now that further details have come to light, it is right that you have made a decision to resign and adhere to the high standards of transparency and openness that you have advocated".
On Tuesday, it emerged that she had suggested giving British aid money to an Israeli army project and that she had held further unauthorized meetings.
"But what I then found out Priti Patel mentioned that meeting and that Number 10 told her not to put that meeting on the list because it would embarrass the Foreign Office".
In September, she had two more meetings with Israeli officials at which United Kingdom government representatives were not present.
On 7 September, she met Gilad Erdan, the minister for public security, and was photographed with him on the House of Commons terrace. "The foreign secretary did become aware of the visit, but not in advance of it". "I am sorry for this and I apologise for it".
The JC claimed to have been told by two separate sources that Number 10 instructed Ms Patel not to include these two meetings in her original release.
In her statement, Patel explained, her quoted remarks may have given the impression that she had informed the foreign secretary about the visit beforehand.
During her trip in August, the Israeli government invited Patel to visit the Golan Heights, which was captured from neighboring Syria during the 1967 Six-Day War and has been settled by Israelis.
The imminent sacking of cabinet minister Priti Patel took another turn this morning when a journalist revealed Theresa May's office did know about her meetings in Israel.
Patel has faced criticism and calls for her to resign or be sacked over the meetings.
Ms Osamor showed she was less than happy about that, telling MPs: "It is hard to think of a more black and white case of breaking the ministerial code of conduct but rather than change the minister, the prime minister somehow decided last night that it is the ministerial code itself that needs changing".
The Cabinet member is under mounting pressure for arranging a dozen meetings with Israeli ministers, including the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, without alerting the Government in advance.
The Sun newspaper reported yesterday that Patel had also failed to disclose that she had met the director general of Israel's Foreign Ministry, Yuval Rotem, in NY and Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan in London.
