Sheep can recognize people's faces from photographs

Sheep can recognize people's faces from photographs

By training sheep using pictures of these celebrities, researchers from the University of Cambridge discovered that the animals are able to recognize familiar faces from 2-D images.

The new study which was published in Royal Society Open Science, concludes that sheep are smart enough to identify humans and nonhuman primates by face.

Neurobiology professor and study lead Jenny Morton says, "Sheep are long-lived and have brains that are similar in size and complexity to those of some monkeys". The Cambridge flock, eight female Welsh Mountain sheep, successfully learned the faces of four celebrities in a recent experiment: Obama, British newscaster Fiona Bruce and actors Emma Watson and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Morton and her team are now studying sheep that have been genetically modified to carry the gene mutation that causes Huntington's disease. That's what scientists discovered through testing sheep by showing them celebrity portraits. After training the sheep again showed two images - a person studied celebrities and the unknown person - and eight times out of ten they came to the celebrities with all the enthusiasm. Scientists now found that that ability can be applied to photos of famous faces, too, Sky News reported.

Iran Displays Missile To Mark Anniversary Of US Embassy Seizure
Under that deal, most global sanctions on Iran were lifted in exchange for Tehran curbing nuclear activity. He also laid additional sanctions on Iran's elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

"My 2001 paper looked very carefully at this with a wider range of stimuli, more sheep and more conditions", he said.

According to the study, this ability has been shown before only in humans. "Although I didn't think sheep could recognize emotion, it made me think about face recognition as a complex brain process".

Face recognition is a critical social skill in humans, and we are able to identify a known person within milliseconds of seeing them. Seven out of 10 times, the animals would favor the familiar faces of their handlers over the celebrities.

"We can't say for sure that the sheep understand that the pictures represent humans". The research could even help with research into neurological diseases. "Finally, after 10 years of development, we now have a really useful battery of tests we can use to measure cognitive function in sheep".
