33 pc reduction? Your dog is protecting you from this disease

33 pc reduction? Your dog is protecting you from this disease

In case you need another reason to snuggle your pup: According to a new study of more than 3.4 million people, owning a dog is linked to a longer life.

He said research has long associated dog ownership with good health but this was 100 times bigger than any previous study of its kind. They focused on 3.4 million people who had no history of cardiovascular disease in 2001, and followed their health records-as well as whether they registered as a dog owner-for about 12 years. Little Fido also gives you some much-needed social interaction if you live alone. People who lived alone with a dog had a 33% reduced risk of death, and an 11% reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, than people who lived alone without a dog.

"The findings of the largest ever investigation of the association between dog-ownership and human health should encourage all of us to add a four-legged friend in our family circle", she said. The dirt and germs that come naturally with a dog might boost its owner's immune system.

"It is also interesting that the dog has had an extremely beneficial impact on the lives of single people who are known to die more often than those who have a family, "said one of the chapters of the study group Mwenya of Mubanga".

The protective effect was especially prominent for people living alone, who have been found to have a higher risk for early death than those who live with other people.

"Other explanations include an increased well-being and social contacts or effects of the dog on the bacterial microbiome in the owner".

Moon, Xi agree to 'normalize' ties 'in all areas'
Xi noted his meeting with the South Korean leader marked a turnaround in South Korea-China relations. He was widely expected to call for China's support when he meets his Chinese counterpart here.

Professor Fall acknowledged this, noting that those with the motivation to look after and register a dog might similarly be more motivated to look after themselves and visit the doctor.

Scientists said the companionship was key, along with the physical activity in taking the dog for a walk.

"And people who get dogs might be different from non-owners in other ways before they choose to get a dog, which could have influenced our results, for example they might already be more interested in physical activity or have a higher level of health".

"Our observational study can not provide evidence for a causal effect of dog ownership on cardiovascular disease or mortality", they write. "More studies should be obtained in the United States", said Bond.

The team behind the Swedish study also observed a link between hunting breed ownership and heart health, which was unexpected.
