FCC chairman reveals plan to kill net neutrality

FCC chairman reveals plan to kill net neutrality

A federal appeals court upheld the rules in 2016 after broadband providers sued. The Republican-led agency is expected to approve it on a party-line vote. Earlier in Summer, FCC received over 21 million comments that urgent the agency to preserve the current net neutrality rules (the commission is likely to call majority "fake" as it had made unsubstantiated hacking claims).

The FCC has confirmed it will vote in December on a proposal from chairman Ajit Pai to reform the net neutrality rules in the US. Pai's FCC spiked the effort to go after AT&T, even before it began rolling out a plan to undo the net neutrality rules entirely.

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai is expected to reveal his plans for net neutrality this week.

. The principle was born as regulators, consumer advocates and internet companies voiced concern about what broadband companies could do with their power as the gateway to the internet - blocking or slowing down apps that rival their own services, for example. "We're very encouraged by Chairman Pai's announcement today that the FCC will move forward next month to restore the successful light-touch regulatory framework for Internet services", Verizon said in a statement.

Pai's full proposal will be released on 22 November, a day before the Thanksgiving holiday in the US. He said earlier this year "people tell me that they want fast, affordable and reliable internet access". "Instead, the FCC would simply require internet service providers to be transparent about their practices so that consumers can buy the service plan that's best for them".

Powerful natural disaster hits Iraq and Iran
Photos and videos of extensive damage in both Iran and Iraq poured in on social media shortly after the natural disaster . Geological Survey says the quake was centered around 19 miles (31 kilometers) outside the eastern Iraqi city of Halabja.

Senator Brian Schatz also shared his thoughts on the plan saying, "If adopted, the FCC's plan will change the way every American gets information, watches movies, listens to music, conducts business and talks to their families". Gutting net neutrality will have a devastating effect on free speech online. Supporters of net neutrality have also said that without regulation, a greater socio-economic digital divide could develop, creating a class of information "haves" and "have nots".

Sen. Ron Wyden, a Democrat representing OR, called the proposal "the crowning achievement of the most anti-consumer FCC chair in history". A Democratic aide said Tuesday that "there might be room for [a] conversation" if Republicans were willing to enshrine the current rules into legislation, but that position is likely to be a nonstarter for GOP critics, who argued that the rules imposed unreasonable costs on businesses.

"The FTC stands ready to protect broadband subscribers from anticompetitive, unfair, or deceptive acts and practices just as we protect consumers in the rest of the Internet ecosystem", Ohlhausen said in a statement Tuesday.
