Google Starts Blocking YouTube on Fire TV, Echo Show

Google Starts Blocking YouTube on Fire TV, Echo Show

As Amazon is not reciprocating, Google pulled out YouTube from Echo Show and Fire TV.

Only Roku is the victor here.

After a row earlier this year where YouTube was removed from Amazon's Echo Show, Google has now announced it will rescind access to YouTube on Amazon's Fire TV, also.

Google said it is pulling YouTube from some Amazon.com Inc. devices in retaliation for Amazon refusing to sell many Google products, escalating a battle between two tech titans as their businesses increasingly overlap.

For a long time YouTube has dominated the smart phone, but in recent years - thanks in large to the availability of smart TVs and devices like Roku - the company grown its presence on TV sets. Amazon hasn't enabled Google Cast support for its Prime Video service, giving it a unique selling point for its Fire TV stick.

Amazon has also made a decision to stop selling the Nest E Thermostat, Nest's Camera IQ, and the Nest Secure alarm system through its sites.

A person familiar with Google's thinking on the matter told Engadget that the problem was Amazon implementing what was essentially a hacked version of YouTube on both the Echo Show and Fire TV.

Economies and societies thrive when women are empowered: Ivanka Trump
She also said that when women work, it creates a "multiplier effect", and leads to more reinvestment in families and society. The senior White House adviser is participating in the Global Entrepreneurship Summit along with 1500 women entrepreneurs.

Between those difficulties and the fact that Amazon pulled some of Nest's recent products (including the new Thermostat E, Camera IQ and Nest Secure alarm system), Google doesn't seem inclined to let Amazon continue to run its "hacked" versions of YouTube on its devices, though our source says that Google would be much happier working directly with Amazon than forcing consumers to pick sides.

The search giant added that Amazon has stopped selling some products from Nest, a device maker that, like Google, is a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. In its own statement, Seattle-based Amazon said its gadgets now send users to the YouTube website, and the company hopes to resolve the dispute as soon as possible.

It's a classic example of two companies fighting very publicly at the expense of the customer.

In its statement Google said: "We've been trying to reach agreement with Amazon to give consumers access to each other's products and services".

YouTube blocked the Echo Show's work-around effective December 5.

The latest standoff between Google and Amazon was ridiculed by a trade association of high-speed internet providers.

Shortly after the Wednesday open, Amazon shares were 0.23% lower at $1,139.00, while the Google stock was barely changed at $1,020.00.
