Respect 'status quo' of Jerusalem: Pope

Respect 'status quo' of Jerusalem: Pope

Early Wednesday, Francis met with a delegation of Palestinian religious and intellectual leaders who were at the Vatican for a previously scheduled meeting with the Vatican's interreligious dialogue office.

The Turkish government said the expected USA move risked igniting a "fire" in the Middle East and would prove a "great disaster".

The Pope has described Jerusalem as "a unique city, sacred to Jews, Christians, and Muslims".

President Trump is expected to announce today that the United States recognises the city as the Israeli capital, and that the USA will relocate its embassy there from Tel Aviv.

"At the same time, I would like to make a heartfelt appeal for everyone's commitment to respect the city's status quo, in conformity with the pertinent United Nations resolutions", Pope Francis said to his weekly general audience.

"We ask you, Mr President, to help us all walk toward more love and a definitive peace, which can not be reached without Jerusalem being for all", they said.

Pope Francis called the status quo of Jerusalem to be respected and "wisdom and prudence" to prevail to avoid further conflict on December 6, ahead of an announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, as global concern mounted.

Schulz said Trump's decision risked setting back the peace process in the Middle East. The call with the pontiff was made at Abbas' initiative, the Associated Press reported, citing Vatican officials.

The status of the city remains disputed.

Saudi Arabia's King Salman warned his close ally that moving the United States embassy was a "dangerous step" that could rile Muslims around the world.

Secretary General António Guterres and Pope Francis both expressed alarm that the announcement would provoke new tensions in the Holy City, which is revered by Jews, Christians and Muslims. "I pray to God that this identity is preserved and reinforced, for the sake of the Holy Land, the Middle East and the whole world, and that wisdom and prudence prevail", he said.

He spoke of dialogue between religions "and also in civil society".
