Trump to send astronauts back to moon

Trump to send astronauts back to moon

"This time we will not only plant our flag and leave our footprint", Trump said at a White House ceremony.

The directive, released later in the day, changes a single paragraph in an 18-page memo former President Barack Obama issued in 2010.

Trump's announcement essentially revives goals that former President George W. Bush announced in 2004. But he set no deadlines for the missions. The policy halts NASA's current work to send astronauts to an asteroid.

It isn't unusual for recent presidents to scale back their predecessors' ambitions for space exploration.

"[The move] marks an important step in returning American astronauts to the Moon for the first time since 1972 for long-time exploration", he said.

Constellation was projected to cost $100 billion, and aimed to get boots on the Moon's surface by the late 2020s.

Trump's plans, which are a part of the Space Policy Directive 1, intend to prioritise the exploration of space, something he has been stressing on for a while now.

"And by your action today - with this clear vision [of] returning Americans to the moon, preparing to lead to Mars and beyond - you are ensuring, Mr. President, that America will lead in space in the future and for generations to come".

Why Irish border deal is crucial to Brexit
Theresa May brought new proposals on the financial settlement, the Northern Irish border and the European Court of Justice. May said that "on a couple of issues some differences do remain which require further negotiation and consultation".

"I don't think simply an order to Nasa is going to do anything unless it is accompanied by a notable increase of Nasa's budget, and by notable I mean a doubling or a tripling or a quadrupling of Nasa's budget", Caceres said. During the program's span, the five shuttles flew 135 missions.

Robert Lightfoot, NASA's acting administrator, said he thinks the new directive could provide "a sense of urgency" to NASA's spaceflight pursuits.

One of NASA's biggest barriers to space exploration right now is the lack of transportation.

When the US retired the space shuttle program in 2011, NASA turned to private industry to fill in the gap when it comes to human space flight.

In the meantime, Americans are still relying on the Russians for rides to the International Space Station.

No human has been on the Moon since Apollo 17 in December 1972. The president said that the United States eventually aims to reach Mars and many other "worlds".

The new heavy-lift rocket that NASA is developing for deep-space missions - known as the Space Launch System - could serve as a core component of a moon trip.
