The Salvation Army to announce Tree of Lights Campaign progress

The Salvation Army to announce Tree of Lights Campaign progress

A food donation made by a Farmington man to a local charitable organization will help feed more than 200 people this Christmas. Far more volunteers signed up previous year, when the weather was colder and snowier.

"For us last year and every year, it's about giving and that's a way to give locally to children, the innocent ones", Chavez said.

"We rely heavily on our Kettle Campaign to fund our community and social service programs", says Major John Murray, Territorial Secretary for Public Relations and Development.

Over the course of an hour, Rep. Yaccarino joined a representative from The Salvation Army and participated in the time-honored tradition of ringing the bell as they greeted holiday shoppers.

State Representative Dave Yaccarino (R-87) joined The Salvation Army's annual Red Kettle Campaign on December 12 outside of Stop & Shop in North Haven. The person or people responsible have been donating coins by dropping them in holiday kettles for at least four or five years, said Andrew Shiels, Warren corps officer for the Salvation Army.

"If there's no one at those kettles, people don't give", Moore said. Families came to Wesley House Community Center, for instance, on Monday and Wednesday to pick up donated toys.

"As soon as they got around the corner and saw toys, they just ran to them", Brown said.

Morman believes the campaign will exceed its goal yet again this year.

Salvation Army will continue to accept mail donations, and are even willing to make house calls, bringing a credit card machine to your door. The kettle campaign ends on Saturday.
