Trump commutes sentence of fraud-convicted kosher slaughterhouse CEO

Nevertheless the compensation will clean Rubashkin of the abiding 19 years of a sentence that had been castigated by politicians on the left and the right as inhuman and abnormal.

The statement added that Rubashkin - a first time, non-violent offender and father of 10 - was sentenced for longer than the "median sentences for murder, kidnapping, sexual abuse, child pornography and numerous other offenses exponentially more serious than his".

Rubashki was convicted in 2009 of financial fraud for submitting fake invoices to the plant's bank that made the company's finances appear healthier than they were so that it could borrow more.

His prosecution came after federal authorities staged a dramatic raid on the company's Iowa plant in 2008, arriving by helicopter and detaining 389 illegal immigrants, including children.

As YWN was first to report the incredible news, President Donald Trump on Wednesday commuted the prison sentence Sholom Rubashkin who was sentenced to 27 years in prison - the first time he's used the presidential power.

Many called Rubashkin's sentence excessive compared with sentences imposed for similar crimes, the White House said. It does not vacate Mr. Rubashkin's conviction, and it leaves in place a term of supervised release and a substantial restitution obligation, which were also part of Mr. Rubashkin's sentence.

With its announcement, the White House enclosed letters from several former United States attorneys general and Congress members from both sides of the aisle that raised questions about his conviction or asked that he receive clemency.

"The President's review of Mr. Rubashkin's case and commutation decision were based on expressions of support from Members of Congress and a broad cross-section of the legal community", the White House said in a statement. Prosecutors misled Reade about their actions leading up to the sale when they scared away potential buyers willing to pay more than the eventual selling price of $8.5 million, the defense team said. More than 30 members of Congress also wrote letters on Rubashkin's behalf, according to the White House.

Court filings indicate Rubashkin tried to appeal the judgment against him as recently as this year, and a federal appeals court declined to hear the case just last week.

News of Rubashkin's commutation was greeted with joy among his community of Chabad-Lubavitch Jews in NY.

Bob Teig, who retired in 2011 after serving as a prosecutor and spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Iowa, said Trump's decision to commute Rubashkin's sentence "makes no sense" given Trump's repeated promises to get tougher on illegal immigration.

"The outrage is backwards", he said.
