HuffPost Verdict: Doctor Who' Christmas Special

HuffPost Verdict: Doctor Who' Christmas Special

This year, though, the "special" took on greater significance, as it had the monumental task of saying goodbye to Peter Capaldi, while also welcoming incoming Doctor Jodie Whittaker, and, of course, affording long-time showrunner Steven Moffat his final turn as head writer.

In the special, he refuses to regenerate, but we know he will end up doing so as Jodie Whittaker (Black Mirror) will be taking up the post in 2018 as the franchise's first female Doctor who was introduced for the first time during the special.

Considering all of that, it should be expected that the Doctor Who fandom had some strong responses to the Thirteenth Doctor's appearance, with many fighting back tears, both for Whitaker's arrival and Peter Capaldi's departure.

The emotional episode also featured appearances from Mark Gatiss, Pearl Mackie, Matt Lucas and David Bradley as the First Doctor. Others were almost speechless with joy. The special aired at 5:30 PM local time in the United Kingdom and was the sixth most-watched program of the day. The Broadchurch actress was cast with much fanfare this past July, and will be the first woman to helm the TARDIS - although, judging by yesterday's episode, the ship is in need of some fix.

Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall is taking over Doctor Who showrunning duties from Steven Moffat on the BBC One and BBC America sci-fi series.

After 54 years and 826 episodes, the Doctor has regenerated as a woman.

When is Doctor Who Christmas Special 2017 on TV?

The episode is titled Twice Upon A Time, and will air on Christmas Day - that's Monday, December 25.
