Apple: All iPhones, iPads, Macs Affected By Chip Flaws

Apple: All iPhones, iPads, Macs Affected By Chip Flaws

In an announcement, the tech major has said that all iPhones, iPads and Mac computers are affected by the two major flaws in computer chips.

Now, the California tech giant has confirmed that it has released mitigations for macOS and iOS as well as Safari on the App Store. "Apple Watch is not affected by Meltdown", the company said. We continue to develop and test further mitigations for these issues and will release them in upcoming updates of iOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS. However, Apple has advised its customers to download softwares only from trusted sources- Mac App Stores to help prevent any possible processor vulnerabilities.

Meltdown and Spectre are what are known as exploits, vulnerabilities or weaknesses, even though they are being reported widely as bugs or flaws on central processing units (CPUs), the computer chips at the heart of every PC or smartphone.

Flu season likely to peak in the coming weeks
Randall Williams said, "We know that historically, the intensity or prevalence of flu can vary from year to year". The more people who get it, he said, the less likely there will be a serious flu problem in the country.

Besides, as per a report published on The guardian.com, Apple is also developing protections against the Spectre flaw for its Safari browser for iOS and macOS devices. Expect updates to Safari for iOS and macOS in the coming days that will mitigate that vulnerability, Apple says.

"Both the "Spectre" and "Meltdown" flaws affect the performance of CPU feature called Speculative Execution" which is responsible for improving speed and operate multiple operations. Ben Johnson, co-founder and chief strategist for cyber security firm Carbon Black, said the delay in updating customers about whether Apple's devices are at risk could affect Apple's drive to get more business customers to adopt its hardware. In addition, many operating system vendors, public cloud service providers, device manufacturers and others have indicated that they have already updated their products and services. These techniques potentially make items in kernel memory available to user processes by taking advantage of a delay in the time it may take the CPU to check the validity of a memory access call. It may well be true that the average users will not see much of a difference on their home computer, but the impact of Meltdown and Spectre is much more widespread than that.

The circumstances that could lead to using the Spectre vulnerability might be a bit more hard to achieve but can still be done using Javascript running on a web browser.
