Cancer death rate down 26 percent since 1991

Cancer death rate down 26 percent since 1991

"This new report reiterates where cancer control efforts have worked, particularly the impact of tobacco control", said Otis W. Brawley, MD, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society.

Breast, lung, prostate and colorectal cancers account for 45 percent of all cancer-related deaths.

Steady reductions in smoking, plus better detection and treatment, accounted for a significant part of the decline.

As a whole, the new ACS report highlights that more can be done to prevent cancer in the first place, for instance by further reducing smoking, which still accounts for almost three out of every ten cancer deaths.

The report estimates that this year there will be 1.7 million new cancer cases and 609,640 cancer deaths in the United States. Despite such hard statistics, cancer deaths continue to decrease-with the death rate dropping 1.7 percent in 2015, according to a new report by the American Cancer Society. The most common cause of cancer death is still lung cancer.

Cancer deaths dropped 1.7 percent from 2014 to 2015, the most recent year reported in the American Cancer Society's annual tally of deaths from the disease.

Breast cancer deaths dropped by 39 percent from 1990 to 2015 among women, thanks largely to improved detection. Currently, fewer cases of prostate cancer are being detected.

Julian Assange's official Twitter account disappears
Another added: "In less than 24 hours the internet is about go absolutely insane if Julian Assange doesn't show proof of life". While the account was offline, anyone who tried to reach Assange's page received an error message from Twitter.

Among women, breast, lung and colorectal cancers total half of all cases.

Deaths due to prostate cancer were more than halved between 1989 and 2015, declining 52 percent.

Yet, as rates of liver cancer diagnoses stabilize in men, they continue to climb quickly for women.

"While the racial gap in cancer mortality continues to narrow, this progress primarily reflects older age groups, masking stark persistent inequalities for young and middle-aged black Americans", researchers write in the report.

Among Americans more youthful than 65, the death rate was just about a third higher among blacks than whites - with considerably bigger variations in many states.

Some states in the report, such as NY and MA, have seen the racial mortality gap disappear for whites and blacks over 65.

The good news, Goler Blount said, is more than 90 percent of black women are now insured following the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.
