Senate push to overturn FCC's net neutrality decision reaches important threshold

Senate push to overturn FCC's net neutrality decision reaches important threshold

"Supporting Net Neutrality should be a no-brainer for members of Congress, whose constituents from across the political spectrum are united in their opposition to the Trump FCC's attack on the open internet".

Lawmakers will have 60 days after the FCC's regulations are submitted to pass the bill. Adam Morfeld of Lincoln, would bring net neutrality rules power to the state level. (Given the convoluted way that Congress counts a legislative day, our best guess is that the clock would run out in early to mid-June or so.) While the countdown hasn't started yet, Democrats announced today that they have succeeded in getting the minimum 30 names necessary to force a vote. People who bristle at government regulations cheered the end of these rules, enacted under Democratic President Barack Obama, since they'd imposed increased oversight of broadband traffic and kept internet service providers from blocking or slowing rivals' content.

Democrats face an uphill battle to win the bipartisan support necessary for the bill's success, however.

On Thursday night, the FCC released the agency's rewritten rules on what internet service providers are now allowed to do. Bernie Sanders, an independent who caucuses with the Democratic Party.

Of course, thanks to Republican control of the House and Senate (not to mention the White House), the chances of the bill passing two votes and being signed into law is still low. A tie vote would likely mean the deciding vote would be cast by VP Mike Pence, dooming the resolution. And even if Congress approves the resolution, President Donald Trump would most likely stand with Ajit Pai - the FCC's chairman whom he appointed and who led the effort to repeal the net-neutrality rules - and veto it. A University of Maryland poll last month found that 83% of Americans and 75% of Republicans said they supported them. But a vote in the Senate would put senators on the record in an election year.

A technology company trade group says it will be participating in looming lawsuits against the FCC for repealing net neutrality.

This specific resolution, which would overturn the Federal Communications Commission's unpopular December 14 decision to destroy Net Neutrality, will be introduced after the agency delivers the final rules to Congress in the coming weeks. It would also prohibit the FCC from ever attempting to repeal the rules in the future.
