Rep. Darrell Issa will not seek re-election

Rep. Darrell Issa will not seek re-election

The congressional district Issa has represented since 2001 - California's 49th - is one of 23 won by Democrat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election that are currently held by Republicans, who are now considered vulnerable in this November's congressional elections.

Issa is a longtime nemesis of the Democrats and then-President Barack Obama.

Issa has been known for introducing and pushing Congressional legislation that specifically targets Indian IT companies, especially those that use H-1B visas.

Issa, who made a national name for himself as an Obama administration antagonist while leading a House investigative committee, will not seek another term, NBC News has confirmed.

Rep. Darrell Issa of California announced his retirement on Wednesday, according to CNN.

"Throughout my service, I worked hard and never lost sight of the people our government is supposed to serve", Issa said in a statement on Wednesday.

On Tuesday one of Issa's California colleagues, Rep. Ed Royce, also announced that he would not seek reelection.

"Secretary Clinton won this district by a huge margin in 2016, and the cohort of strong Democratic challengers, unprecedented grassroots activism, and historic investment by the DCCC in Southern California means we are in a strong position to elect a Democrat to the 49 District this fall", Godinich added. Royce is also from California.

Those activists have protested weekly outside Issa's Vista, California, district office - leading to a odd scene in May in which Issa stood on his rooftop, looking down at the protesters below.

Issa said "there are plenty of people that fit the district just fine" and predicted reporters would be covering just as many Republicans entering the race as Democrats already competing in the primary. "We are truly grateful for his service", said Rep. Steve Stivers, chairman of the NRCC. "While Democrats fight with each other, Republicans will focus on fighting Democrats - and that's how we plan to win", Stivers said in a statement.

But the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee suggested otherwise.
