Shallow quake hits Caribbean Sea, felt along Quintana Roo

Shallow quake hits Caribbean Sea, felt along Quintana Roo

A major quake, one of the most severe in the past 100 years, struck off the coast of Honduras late Tuesday night.

Tsunami advisories were canceled overnight for Puerto Rico and other parts of the Caribbean after a powerful natural disaster struck in the Caribbean Sea.

Officials in Honduras said tremors were felt in the majority of the country, from the capital of Tegucigalpa in the east to as far north as the Mexican state of Quintana Roo.

But two hours after the quake, the threat of a tsunami had passed, and the Tsunami Warning Center withdrew all advisories connected with the quake.

The epicenter of the quake was 125.4 miles north/northeast off the coast of Barra Patucca, Honduras and 25 miles from the Swan Islands, which only houses a small naval post.

The National Coordinator of Civil Protection in Mexico Luis Felipe Puente wrote, "Based on information from the Tsunami Alert Center @SEMAR_mx, we ruled out the possibility of the generation of a #Tsunami".

There have been no immediate reports of damage or injuries, however, this is an ongoing story and more will be available as information is released.

Brad was at his vacation rental in Cancun when the tremor, which is reportedly one of the largest to hit the Caribbean in modern times, shook the building.

The temblor was only 6.2 miles deep.
