Southern California sees deadly mudslides in areas hit by wildfires

- Heavy rain falling in parts of Southern California Tuesday morning wreaked havoc in Santa Barbara County and especially in Montecito where some homes slid off their foundations, twenty people were injured, at least 15 people were killed and an unknown amount are still missing.

A winter weather advisory is in place for mountain areas, where officials warned motorists to prepare for hard travel conditions, including gusty winds, low visibility and snow-covered roads.

Many places will require days of work for the clean-up to be finished and the costs of fix are likely to be significant with the extensive damage to many multi.million dollar properties, some of whom only just escaped destruction in the fires before being hit by this flooding. Looking for missing persons. The courtyard of the 90-year-old Montecito Inn, built by silent movie actor Charlie Chaplin, was filled with a thick crust of debris driven by the slides.

Some undamaged businesses closed as they lacked water, gas and other supplies to operate.

Forecasters said the maximum rainfall occurred in a 15-minute span starting at 3:30 a.m. near the Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria areas of Santa Barbara County.

A fire truck drives through the wildfire damaged Coffey Park neighborhood as rain water pools where a home once stood, Monday, Jan. 8, 2018, in Santa Rosa, Calif.

She posted another video to Instagram on Wednesday showing damage to her home's back yard.

In Montecito, firefighters rescued two men and a woman from flood debris. And in the Sun Valley area crews were working to remove a Los Angeles Police Department patrol auto that became stuck in mud along a section of La Tuna Canyon Road south of the Foothill Freeway.

Already, the incident is deadlier than the 2005 California mudslide - which took place only 20 miles from Tuesday's disaster.

The mudslides were triggered by torrential downpours that unleashed rain on the region, which was hit by last month's mammoth Thomas Fire - the largest wildfire ever recorded in California.
