Egyptian fire kills Palestinian at sea: Gaza Health Ministry

Egyptian fire kills Palestinian at sea: Gaza Health Ministry

THE Israeli military has said it destroyed an attack tunnel built by the Hamas militant group that stretched from the Gaza Strip into Egypt.

Palestinian security sources in Gaza said nobody was wounded in the Israeli strike.

Commenting on the demolition of the tunnel, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said that "some people say that when the IDF attacks Gaza they are hitting sand dunes, but that is incorrect". There were no casualties.

In addition, Mordechai informed the Palestinian Authority leadership that due to the extensive construction and strategic military design of the latest tunnel, and its complex design, the IDF has chose to close the Kerem Shalom Crossing for the time being.

Israel has made neutralising the tunnel threat a top priority since its 2014 war, when Hamas militants made their way into Israel. At the same time, 67 Israeli soldiers and four civilians were killed in Israel during the battles.

This is the third tunnel from Gaza that Israel has attacked in the past two months.

IDF forces are believed to have destroyed four terror tunnels since late October, targeting one in October, one in December, and two in January.

The military sees the tunnel as "a severe breach of Israel's sovereignty".

The tunnel, which the army said belonged to the Hamas terror group that controls the Gaza Strip, ran underneath the Kerem Shalom Gaza crossing, as well as below major gas and diesel pipelines, spokesperson Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus told reporters Sunday.

Cornricus said that if the tunnel was only to smuggle harmless goods, there was no need for it to go under Kerem Shalom. Our message to the Gazan leadership and residents of the strip is clear: "invest in the sanctity of life and not in death tunnels".

Fishermen from Gaza have often brought in catch from Egyptian territory to sidestep restrictions imposed by Israel's naval blockade of the enclave, which Israel maintains citing security concerns. The military released photos and video of a wide tunnel with concrete paneled walls.
