President Trump's former top adviser set to appear before House Intelligence Committee

Bannon recently lost his job at the helm of Trump-friendly Breitbart in part because of his recent comments about Trump and Russian Federation.

The revelation came as Bannon was appearing behind closed doors with the House Intelligence Committee to testify in that committee's probe into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

The subpoena also indicates that Bannon is not a target of the special counsel because Justice Department rules allow prosecutors to subpoena targets only in rare circumstances. In an interview with WABC-AM radio broadcast on Sunday, Lewandowski said he expects the closed-door meeting to take place either Wednesday or Thursday.

Sources told the Fox News reporter that Bannon was told by the White House not to answer lawmakers' questions about the administration or the Trump transition, although he did not claim executive privilege. Mr Bannon was quoted in the book, Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, as calling a meeting between Trump campaign staff and a Russian lawyer "treasonous".

Rep. Mike Conaway, the Texas Republican leading the House Intelligence Committee Russia investigation, declined to comment on a subpoena or Bannon's testimony as he went back into the committee's secure spaces.

Mueller's office is investigating any links between Trump's campaign team and Russians who sought to influence the 2016 election by hacking Democratic officials and pushing fake news about Trump opponent Hillary Clinton. But it was not clear why Mueller treated Bannon differently than the dozen administration officials who were interviewed in the final months of a year ago and were never served with a subpoena.

Bannon's relationship with Robert and Rebekah Mercer, who partly own the data analytics company used by the Trump campaign, Cambridge Analytica, is also likely to be of interest to the panel. Two other former Trump associates, George Papadopoulos and former National Security Adviser Gen. Michael Flynn have already been indicted on charges of lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He continued to speak with President Trump and tried to promote the president's agenda. Bannon also allegedly said there was "zero" chance that Trump Jr. did not walk the Russians to meet his father. When asked in an interview with The Wall Street Journal whether his break with Bannon was "permanent", the president replied, "I don't know what the word "permanent" means".

Separately on Tuesday, Bannon was meeting with the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee.
