Maria Sharapova into 3rd round of Australian Open, Johanna Konta out

Maria Sharapova stormed into the third round of the Australian Open on Thursday morning with a straight sets win over Anastasija Sevastova.

"I still have some pain", said Wawrinka, who underwent two operations to fix cartilage in his left knee last summer.

"I was really happy with how aggressive I was". I'm looking forward to work on it more.

A more focussed Sharapova stuck to her game plan and was able to prevail 7-4 in the breaker to capture the match 6-1, 7-6 (4).

The five-time Grand Slam champion lost to Sevastova at the US Open previous year and won a tight thriller in Beijing, leaving her pleased with a much more convincing victory on a hot day in Melbourne.

Kerber raced through the first set in 17 minutes but had her struggles in the second and was broken twice before converting her second match point and extending her streak to 10 consecutive wins.

"I think I have learned that from a very young age, and I have come to understand it and appreciate it".

With the win, unseeded Sharapova has now improved her record in first rounds of Grand Slams to 48-3 while she has improved her record against Germans to 26-5, the WTA reported.

Ahead of FISA Vote, Trump Sows Confusion
It's the foreign intelligence surveillance act that was approved as a result of 9/11 created to help prevent terrorism. But the House voted Thursday to renew Section 702 for another six years in roughly its current form.

After nine of 10 American female players bowed out on day one - including Sloane Stephens, Venus Williams and CoCo Vandeweghe - Brengle could not stem the U.S. outflow as she succumbed 6-3, 6-1 to the British ninth seed. "Was a tough one in all aspect of the game, of the energy", Wawrinka said.

As for how far she can go in the tournament, she said: "I feel like I'm building".

Six-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic has distanced himself from reports that he called for a boycott of next year's tournament unless there was an increase in prize money.

"I felt like I have got a lot of things out of the way physically and emotionally and mentally a year ago with - there was a lot of firsts again for me, playing the first tournament, first Grand Slam, and just different feelings and what it would be routinely", she said.

"It felt great to be back on the court and compete again", he said. "I hope to improve in this aspect", added Djokovic, via ESPN.

Kerber has turned over a new leaf in a number of ways, parting ways with long-time coach Torben Beltz in November, the man who guided her to two grand slam titles and the world number one ranking in 2016 during an eight-year partnership.

Eighth seed Caroline Garcia had to fight to secure her place in round three, coming back from a set down to beat Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 6-8.
