US Government Shuts Down Over Immigration and Budget Fight

US Government Shuts Down Over Immigration and Budget Fight

This legislation would likely be dead on arrival in the Senate, where Democrats have said they have enough votes to block the legislation. But the two New Yorkers, who pride themselves on their negotiating abilities, emerged from the meeting at the White House without an agreement, and Republicans and Democrats in Congress continued to pass off responsibility.

The White House, in a statement by Press Secretary Sarah Sanders reacting to the government shutdown, said Senate Democrats owned the unfortunate event and blamed "obstructionist losers" for failing to reach a deal. Republicans only control 51 seats, so they needed Democratic votes to cross that threshold. All non-essential Federal employees will be furloughed and will not be paid until a funding bill has passed.

But essential services will still run.

It's the first time the government has shut down since 2013, that lasted for 16 days. "But we still need Congress to appropriate the funds", he said.

White House Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney speaks during a briefing on a possible government shutdown at the White House in Washington D.C. January 19, 2018.

The US government has shut down after US Senators failed to reach a last-minute deal to fund its operations, divided in a bitter dispute over immigration and border security.

A more focussed Sharapova stuck to her game plan and was able to prevail 7-4 in the breaker to capture the match 6-1, 7-6 (4). As for how far she can go in the tournament, she said: "I feel like I'm building".

Democrats have tried to use the Friday night funding deadline to win concessions from Republicans, including an extension of an Obama-era program protecting some young immigrants from deportation.

As the USA government shut down after senators failed to pass a stopgap motion before the midnight deadline, funding has ceased for many federal agencies, forcing hundreds of thousands of staffers to take a leave of absence.

Democrats say the problem lies, in a big way, with the president's flip-flopping on key issues.

Even with that majority, the government shutdown was somewhat expected.

A Senate Democratic source said that was still too far out.

McConnell also referenced that the bill includes six years of funding for a health insurance program for children from low-income families. In recent weeks Dreamers and pro-immigration activists have been holding protests and sit-ins in Washington to pressure U.S. Democrats on including the protections in the spending bill.
