Overseas Troops Cannot Watch NFL Playoffs During Government Shutdown

Overseas Troops Cannot Watch NFL Playoffs During Government Shutdown

Due to of the government shutdown, United States troops will not be able to watch either of the NFL's conference championship games on the American Forces Network, which serves as the primary channel for overseas troops to watch American programming. It showed the AFN logo with the words: "Due to the government shutdown, AFN services are not available".

The NFL will give troops free access to Sunday's conference title games at USO facilities.

Stars and Stripes said it was unclear why the network went off the air completely, noting that during the last government shutdown in October 2013, the AFN provided some news and radio services.

The Pentagon, according to CNN's Barbara Starr, said that AFN would remain unavailable if the shutdown continued into Sunday.

While the network's staff would normally be furloughed during the shutdown, the AFN's television and radio broadcasts have been deemed "essential" services.

Korea orchestra to perform in S. Korea during Winter Games
Critics question how long the warmer mood can last without any serious discussion on the North's nuclear disarmament. North Korea apparently is also sending a delegation to represent the county at the South Korea sports celebration.

The government shutdown was triggered late Friday when a spending bill passed by the House faltered in the Senate, mainly because it had some major flaws.

As any National Football League fan can imagine, this is a particularly inconvenient time for the American Forces programming to be interrupted, because both the NFC and AFC championship games happen this Sunday.

The loss of AFN programming means USA military personnel overseas had to find another way to watch the NFL's NFC and AFC football championship games. "No NFL divisional championship games ... ideal timing ..."

For those who have been in the armed services, life can be pretty miserable at times and the games are an invaluable way to rest and unwind. "Sad that the men and women who have sacrificed so much are deprived of even the most basic connection to home bc Democrats are playing political games", Sanders tweeted.
