London nightclub Heaven had to be evacuated this morning

London nightclub Heaven had to be evacuated this morning

"This is a large gas leak in the street and as appreciation we've evacuated people and Charing Cross Station is closed", said Brett Loft of London Fire Brigade.

UPDATE: #LondonCharingCross is likely to be closed for some time following a gas leak nearby. There are still high readings of natural gas in the area.

The discovery saw approximately 1,450 people being evacuated from the nearby Heaven nightclub and a hotel. Hotel guests were moved into emergency accommodation.

Roads in the area were sealed off and a 150-metre cordon put in place while engineers from the National Grid engineers worked on fixing the leak.

A Network Rail spokesperson said this morning: "Charing Cross station is now closed owing to a gas leak in a nearby road".

"A ruptured gas main was discovered using detection equipment and high levels of natural gas were detected in the atmosphere", a London Fire Brigade spokesman said earlier on Tuesday.

"We do not know the cause of the gas leak at this stage".

Egypt election: Retired general and candidate Sami Anan arrested
Would-be candidates for the presidency must register with the National Elections Authority by January 29. He announced his intention to run for a second four-year term in a televised news conference on Friday.

"We are working to sort it out as quickly as possible".

They said: "Due to a gas leak in the Strand, WC2 businesses and hotels are being evacuated as a precaution".

A rest centre has been set up for affected residents at the Queen Mother's Sport Centre in Vauxhall Bridge Road, Westminster Council said.

LONDON was crippled by travel chaos this morning after Charing Cross station closed amid a gas leak. Literally chaos. Crush on the stairs.

It's been reported a total of 1,500 had to vacate the area, with 1,000 of them said to be removed from Heaven.

"Yes we were evacuated just after 3am, but there was no panic, no "security being knocked aside".
