Strong quake sparks panic in Indonesia

Strong quake sparks panic in Indonesia

The quake struck around 65 miles west of the city of Sukabumi on the island of Java, at a depth of 21 miles. "It's quite strong. We're all outside now".

Another hoax that spread widely on social media yesterday was a circular, supposedly issued by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), warning of an even stronger aftershock, measuring up to 7.5 on the richter scale, that could possibly hit just off the coast of Banten province, potentially creating a tsunami. "I ran outside the building. Residents should go back to their normal activity", said Dr Daryono, head of quake information and tsunami warning at BMKG. The epicenter was about 153 kilometers (95 miles) southwest of Jakarta, the capital. "So far we have counted at least 115 homes" that have been damaged, Abu Salim, a spokesman for volunteer disaster relief group Tagana, told AFP. "The epicentre is in an area prone to quakes".

"I am calling on people to be prepared, especially if you are in buildings with a weak structure", she added.

A moderately strong natural disaster shook the Indonesian island of Java on Tuesday, killing at least one person and damaging hundreds of homes.

Buildings in the capital swayed for 10 to 20 seconds and some ordered evacuations, sending streams of people into the streets.

Indonesia is regularly rocked by earthquakes - the country located on the Ring of Fire, a huge area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions frequently occur.
