Why 'Lady Bird' Director Greta Gerwig's Oscar Nom Is Important

Why 'Lady Bird' Director Greta Gerwig's Oscar Nom Is Important

The 34-year-old filmmaker and actress is also the only female nominee in the all-male line-up.

In 2018. Ninety fucking Academy nominations deep.

The Irish-born actress earned a Best Actress nomination for her role in Lady Bird, which was also nominated for Best Picture.

The 90th Academy Awards will air on March 4 at 8 p.m. on ABC.

Gerwig will compete with several heavyweights for this year's best director prize; including Christopher Nolan, Jordan Peele, Paul Thomas Anderson and Guillermo del Toro. Prior to handing out the Best Director award, presenter Natalie Portman introduced the category by mockingly saying: "And here are the all-male nominees". Shame, shame on you Golden Globes.

Police added there were several children inside the house at the time of the deadly shooting. "Chris is the cream of the crop. "The person who used that force is not at large", Chardo said in a press conference, according to WGAL .

"I remember when Kathryn Bigelow won and how much that meant to me", Gerwig told USA TODAY by phone. Still, Gerwig is just the fifth woman to ever be nominated in the category following Bigelow, Sofia Coppola (Lost In Translation), Jane Campion (The Piano) and Lena Wertmüller (Seven Beauties), while Peele is now the fifth black director to ever be nominated after the aforementioned Daniels, John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood), Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave) and Moonlight filmmaker Barry Jenkins just last year.

Rachel Morrison became the first woman to receive a Best Cinematography nomination for Mudbound, while Greta Gerwig is only the fifth female to get a Best Director nomination for Lady Bird. The last was Kathryn Bigelow for directing The Hurt Locker - and she became the only woman to ever win the award in 2010.

Sofia Coppola "Lost in Translation" (2003) - Sofia Coppola was the first American woman nominated for Best Director. However, Gerwig was the only woman with a realistic shot, given that the Academy tends to not get too excited about honoring crowd-pleasing superhero movies like "Wonder Woman".

Dee Reeswrote the screenplay for "Mudbound" alongside Virgil Williams, making her the first black woman in 45 years - and the second ever - to be nominated for best original screenplay. "I just keep feeling like I want more female storytellers and I want it quite selfishly because I want to see their stories".

Denzel Washington, perhaps a surprise best actor nominee for crime thriller "Roman J. Israel, Esq.", also beat his own record for the most-nominated black actor in Oscar history. (Besides, "We gotta play "Crash Into Me"!" she notes.) For now, Gerwig's just excited for the chance to celebrate with her cast and crew.
