WRAPUP 1-HIGHLIGHTS-Tennis-Australian Open day 13

WRAPUP 1-HIGHLIGHTS-Tennis-Australian Open day 13

Wozniacki won her first Grand Slam tennis title Saturday when she defeated top-seeded Simona Halep 7-6 (7-2), 3-6 to capture the women's singles title at the Australian Open.

Wozniacki will now replace Halep as the world No. 1 when the new rankings are released Monday, the first time she will have held top spot since 2012.

This championship match was the first in the Open era where the No. 1 and No. 2 players in the world met for a Grand Slam title with neither having already won a major.

"I was in this position in (the) French Open, so I can make (it) a better match", the Romanian said of her approach to the AO2018 final. Is just a tennis match in the end.

"Thank you for being here and I'm hoping I'm finally going to get that Elle cover".

But Halep rallied again and, after an exchange of service breaks, she was leading 4-3 in the third when Wozniacki called for a medical timeout. This is also her first final appearance at Melbourne, though like Halep, she has appeared in two finals previously - at the US Open. "I've dreamt of this moment for so many years and to be here today is a dream come true". I am shaking. It's very emotional.

"I know that today is a tough day", Wozniacki said to Halep. "It's all good. I'm looking forward to playing tomorrow, to enjoy the time, and to be focused on myself because it's the most important thing to play my game". The Exchange market is now pricing the Dane as a [2.38] underdog and I'm very surprised by this.

However, the Romanian was unable to maintain momentum and Wozniacki duly reeled off three games in succession, securing victory on her first match point when Halep netted. The top seed battled on following the break, and took levelled the match with a 6-3 win. Amazingly, she is still only 27 years old, and could potentially add another major or two, a surprising turn of events considering early retirement was rumored not that long ago.

IPhone Battery Explodes After Man Bites It for Testing if Fake
The flames and explosion caused by this dubious experiment were immortalized by the store's CCTV cameras. An iPhone user in Nanjing City, China visited an electronics store to replace the battery of his device.

Halep also, against Kerber in Thursday's emi-final, was match point down and looked on her way home but pulled through.

Looking back to her second-round victory over Jana Fett, when she saved two match points and came back from 5-1 down in the third set, Wozniacki said: "From being nearly out of the tournament to sitting here with the Australian Open trophy, it's unbelievable".

Soon after Halep signaled to her coach Darren Cahill that she wasn't feeling well and there were worrying scenes as she had her blood pressure taken and an ice towel applied in the next changeover. You stood by me every step of the way.

"He said that he's really proud of me, of what I've done this tournament", Halep said. However, she expects to play another thrilling game like today.

"Of course I'm sad", she said.

In the third it turned out that nothing could stop Denmark's Wozniacki, not even pain in her leg below the knee.

It was a relief, she said, to talk to reporters and not be asked when she was going to win a Grand Slam.
