Macron at Davos: EU Must Strengthen to Compete with China

Macron at Davos: EU Must Strengthen to Compete with China

President Donald Trump is expected to invite French President Emmanuel Macron to Washington for an official state visit later this year, the first of his presidency, according to two diplomatic sources.

But he balanced that out by switching to French to denounce excesses of fiscal and social dumping and urge a reset on how the world resolves such issues. Netanyahu responded to Macron's remark by stressing that Israel and France's strong relationship is also crucial for the security of Europe. "How are we going to explain to people that they are going to be more vulnerable?"

"When you arrive here and see the snow, it could be hard to believe in global warming", Macron said to a packed audience of business leaders and politicians.

His address followed on from a "Choose France" charm offensive on Monday at the Versailles palace where the 40-year-old centrist bathed in the attention of 140 bosses from companies such as Facebook and Google, who announced major investments.

Mr Macron called for a "global compact" to harness the negative effects of globalisation, warning against a race to the bottom on taxes and regulations. What was needed, he insisted, were "coordinated strategies" across the board. "We can create a lot of jobs with such a strategy", he said.

He said the world was fractured due to a less equitable growth.

LeBron congratulates himself as NBA points milestone looms
At least for part of a game, James and his teammates can put that squabbling behind them and celebrate his undeniable greatness. The post received mixed reviews, with some joining in the congratulating and acknowledging James' right to be proud of himself.

As USA TODAY reported, Macron's opening remarks included a joke about his American counterpart's infamous climate change denial.

"That is a huge advantage in terms of attractiveness and competitiveness", he said.

"Economic growth is not an end in itself, it is a means to an end", said Macron on Wednesday. Macron's speech came weeks after the United States made major cuts in corporate tax rates and cut taxes on repatriating foreign profits - prompting Apple alone to bring back tens of billions of dollars held offshore in the expectation of a tax cut. Most of its European Union neighbours have already introduced more competitive rates.

Earlier, German Chancellor Angela Merkel praised the European recovery but admitted that Germany was falling behind in the digital ecomomy.

The pair got off to a rocky start last June.
