Seine Reaches Peak in Paris

Seine Reaches Peak in Paris

Paris's "Bateaux Mouches" tourist boats have been shut down due to the high waters while swans have been seen swimming where there are usually pavements and rats forced up onto the streets.

While forecasters believe it will continue to rise, peaking on Sunday night or Monday, it is not expected to reach the 2016 high of 6.1m, AFP news agency reports.

About 1,500 people have been evacuated from their homes in the Paris region because of the flooding and a similar number are without electricity.

The river had risen 11cm (4.3 inches) in 24 hours by Saturday evening, more than four metres above its normal height, causing problems for commuters and residents near its overflowing banks.

But the world's most visited museum was still on alert Sunday, along with the Musee d'Orsay and Orangerie galleries, with the lower level of the Louvre's Islamic arts wing closed to visitors at least until Monday.

"There are six studios in the basement, and we've had to set up blocks outside to keep the windows from breaking and covering everything in water", he said.

The Seine's water level will remain high for several days as grounds and lakes are saturated.

A statue of a French soldier from the Crimean War - known as The Zouave - on the Pont de l'Alma has also always been used as a marker for water levels in the city.

Punjab's Most Wanted Gangster Vicky Gounder Shot Dead In Police Encounter
Gounder, who had led the Nabha jailbreak with five other prisoners in November 2016, continued to elude police. Prema Lahoria is a Jalandhar-based gangster who assisted Gounder in many killings, according the police.

A health centre in the north-western suburbs, where 86 patients were receiving care, was evacuated on Friday.

It's enough to worry Joao de Macedo, janitor at a residential building in Paris's upscale 16th Arrondissement.

Weeks of rainfall have come to end but it'll take another week for the water level to fully recede.

French meteorologists say the months of December and January were the third wettest ever since records began in 1900.

Within Paris, the Seine runs in a deep channel which limits the effects of the rising waters.

"Everyone is getting around by boat", resident Serge Matikhine said.

Last time the water levels reached 20 feet above normal was in 2016, causing a serious flooding event.
