Court sentences London mosque attacker to 43-years in prison

Court sentences London mosque attacker to 43-years in prison

Darren Osborne, 48, received the life sentence for deliberately mowing down worshippers outside two mosques in north London "with a terrorist motive" shortly after 12.15am on June 19 past year.

Judge Bobbie Cheema-Grubb said Osborne's mind had been "poisoned" by far-right ideas as she sentenced the 48-year-old to life with no chance of parole for 43 years.

A British court has sentenced the man who carried out a deadly vehicle ramming attack near a mosque in London previous year to life in prison.

Osborne was convicted Thursday of killing Makram Ali and injuring 12 others in the attack last June.

Sue Hemming from the British Crown Prosecution Service said Osborne was motivated by his "hatred of Muslims".

She imposed a life sentence for murder and attempted murder, with a minimum stretch of 43 years behind bars.

Mohammed Mahmoud, the imam of the Muslim Welfare House in Finsbury Park, protected Osborne in the immediate aftermath of the attack from the angry crowd.

Osborne, from the Welsh capital of Cardiff, was convicted of terrorism-related murder and attempted murder, despite his denial of the charges.

Members of Mr. Ali's family watched from the public gallery as the sentence was handed down.

Earlier, in a victim impact statement, the court heard Ms Akhtar describe how her mother is scared to go out alone "in case she is attacked because she is visibly a Muslim who wears a headscarf".

A handwritten note found in the van and Osborne's comments to the police caught on a police officer's body-worn camera indicated that he wanted to use violence in response to other criminal violence, in particular the child grooming that occurred in Rochdale and the terror attacks in London and Manchester in 2017.

Makram Ali, aged 51, died after being hit by a hired van driven by Osborne last June.

"I went to his funeral and he was a husband who was loved and a father who was loved - they've lost him because of the actions of this terrorist".

The Home Secretary said the Government would soon be publishing a new counter-terrorism strategy setting out its approach to tackling anyone who seeks to attack Britain, its values and way o life.

Witnesses told the court that Osborne shouted: "I've done my job", before being caught and restrained by passersby while trying to escape.
