Trump Implores Senate To Vote On Hardline Immigration Bill

Trump Implores Senate To Vote On Hardline Immigration Bill

President Trump is delivering remarks around 12:30 p.m. ET to House and Senate Republicans in Lewisburg, WV at their annual retreat.

"I think we know we're going to be in for a pretty nasty and tough year", Dent said.

President Donald Trump is calling on Senate Republicans to bring his immigration framework to a vote.

Some Republicans have indicated they want a full-year of defense spending attached to a short-term bill, and conservatives in the House have suggested they won't support another short-term bill unless the House votes on the hardline immigration bill they support.

The flood of low-skilled immigrants into the USA has suppressed wages, harmed American workers and strained federal resources.

The president's speech highlighted numerous same points as his State of the Union Address, calling for more unity and praising the Republican party for all the work they have down over the past year and calling it one of the greatest years for a political party.

Trump also sought to pushback on Democrats framing of the immigration discussions as working to protect "Dreamers", a term used to refer to recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy, a program that protected undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children. And while there was no formal immigration session on the agenda, Lankford and other lawmakers said the issue has come up frequently in informal talks among lawmakers. That's unclear. It's also unclear whether strong Democratic opposition to the "four pillars" approach will eventually put a narrower scope for a deal back on the table-or whether, as many observers suspect, the whole idea is to force Democrats once again into a position of shutting down the government over immigration, and in this case by rejecting a deal that's generous to Dreamers but not anyone else.

German automakers funded diesel emissions tests on humans, local media says
For his part, chairman of supervisory Board of Volkswagen , Hans Dieter Pötsch, has distanced himself from experiments. The German government said on Monday that any auto emissions testing on monkeys or people was unjustifiable.

"There's still a lot of work that needs to be done", said Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., the chairwoman of the House Republican Conference, in the Post's report.

"We largely agree on the DACA fix, the border security, ending chain migration and the visa lottery program reforms".

Amid the optimism were nagging questions about whether lawmakers will enact immigration changes or deadlock over Trump's calls for a wall along the Mexican border and a path to citizenship for young immigrants here illegally.

Those negotiations were a key reason Democrats relented during the last shutdown, not wanting to poison the talks and because Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) assured lawmakers he meant to bring up a DACA bill with a fair and open amendment process to allow Democrats to shape the bill.

But he made that offer contingent on new curbs for other types of legal immigrants, and on a $25 billion fund to pay for his long-promised wall along the border with Mexico.

To that end, Trump and Vice President Pence are much more closely aligned with their congressional allies than any time in this young administration.

"To get it done, we'll all have to make some compromises along the way, to get it done this way", Trump told lawmakers from his party at a countryside retreat. It's the thing that's dividing Republicans and Democrats.
