New Zealand Sevens round-up: Southern Hemisphere domination continues with Fiji victory

New Zealand Sevens round-up: Southern Hemisphere domination continues with Fiji victory

The Cup Final saw the only two unbeaten teams do battle for the title and concluded two days of action in the World Rugby Sevens Series' newest city Hamilton.

The world champion South Africans, host New Zealand and Olympic champion Fiji all finished with unblemished 3-0 records from pool play while Kenya topped the tight Pool D with two wins and a draw.

After four tournaments so far, each one having had a different victor to illustrate how tight the competition is this year, South Africa are top of the standings with 77 points, with New Zealand second on 66, then Fiji on 62 and Australia on 60.

Fiji ended New Zealand's hopes of winning a tournament in front of their home fans.

The crowds packed the stands at FMG Stadium Waikato for the titanic semifinal tussle Hamilton had been waiting for - and the contest of the two great rugby sevens nations produced an outstanding encounter worthy of the occasion.

New Zealand were denied in the bronze medal match, after they were edged 8-7 by rivals Australia.

Inventories are reported with a two-month lag, so by the time they have reached the five-year average, OPEC may be late to react. The investment bank said Brent likely will average $75 a barrel over the next three months, up from an earlier forecast of $62.

Samoan sevens player Jacob Ale has been suspended for one match after he was cited for a unsafe charge in their playoff match for 5th place against Kenya at the HSBC New Zealand Sevens tournament in Hamilton this evening.

Speedster Eroni Sau is on fifth place with 151 points. "I can't wait for our 2019 Sevens tournament, and I think a lot of the people here this weekend will be back next year".

Seabelo Senatla, who scored eight tries at the tournament, said the players are pleased with the weekend's effort, despite defeat in the final.

They took full advantage of their reprieve by beating hosts New Zealand 14-12 in the semi-finals to set up a clash with South Africa.

Cup quarter-finals: Fiji 12-10 Samoa, New Zealand 19-12 England, Kenya 12-33 Australia, South Africa 22-0 Scotland.

In Hamilton, Kenya beat both Samoa and Canada with identical 19-14 margins in pool matches, drew 19-19 with U.S., before losing 33-12 to Australia in Cup quarters.
